Success Is Just a High-Performing Prison If You’re Still Unaware

FILM UPDATES:

* I’m at the Psychedelic Science 2025 Conference in Denver to meet many of the leading minds in this space. I have an on-camera interview with Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps The Score, and some exciting conversations with the leading scientist studying 5-MeO.

Stay tuned for images and videos from the event!

Let’s get into today's issue: Success Is Just a High-Performing Prison If You’re Still Unaware

Hey friend,

We did it.

We cracked the code.
We climbed the ladder.
We optimized the calendar, hacked our morning routine, and maybe even journaled in three colors.
We built something impressive.

And yet… something still feels off.

It’s subtle. A quiet ache. A background hum of “Is this it?”

From the outside, everything looks dialed.
But on the inside? You’re still not free.

Because success, without awareness, is just a prettier prison.

The High Performer’s Dilemma

Here’s what no one tells you about high performance. It’s really easy to confuse mastery with avoidance.

  • Avoidance of feeling.
  • Avoidance of uncertainty.
  • Avoidance of questioning the very identity you’ve built your empire on.

When you’re great at performing, the world rewards your mask. So why would you ever take it off?

You’ve trained yourself to turn pain into productivity. You’ve built a reputation on being unshakeable. You’ve made peace with discomfort by outworking it.

But, you didn’t solve the problem…You just outran it with a faster treadmill.

The Real Root of Restlessness

The discomfort you feel isn’t because you haven’t achieved enough. It’s because you’ve built your identity on the pursuit of achievement itself.

And that’s shaky ground.

When success becomes your source of self-worth, you become addicted to the next milestone. When the applause fades, you panic. When stillness arises, you sprint.

Not because you’re lazy. Not because you’re weak. But because you’ve never learned how to just be.

Enter: The Prison of Progress

You’ve probably heard some version of, “Growth is everything.” “If you’re not growing, you’re dying.” “Never settle.”

Sounds inspiring, right?

But what if I told you that same belief system…is what’s keeping you stuck?

When your value is tethered to more money, more clients, more goals, you can’t relax. You can’t slow down. You can’t be present.

Because presence feels… unproductive, and that makes your ego itch.

So you stay in motion. But you never arrive.

How do I know? It was my life for 2 decades.

The Paradox: Awareness ≠ Apathy

Let’s be clear. Awareness doesn’t mean you stop building. It just means you stop bleeding for it.

When awareness leads, action becomes cleaner, calmer and more aligned.

You stop chasing worth. You start moving from wholeness.

And suddenly, the empire you’re building isn’t just big—it’s true.

The Mirror Practice

Here’s something bold you can try this week:

  1. Look at your biggest goal right now.
  2. Ask: If I achieved this… and nothing changed inside me… would it still be worth it?
  3. Then: Who am I without this goal driving me?

This isn’t meant to shame the goal. It’s meant to strip away the illusion that it’s you.

Success isn’t the problem. Unconscious success is.

Final Thought

There’s nothing wrong with ambition. But when ambition becomes our identity, we’ve traded one cage for another.

Freedom isn’t found in what we accomplish. It’s found in what we no longer need to prove.

So keep creating.
Keep expanding.
Just make sure the one doing the building…
…is awake.

Because a prison with gold bars is still a prison.

Best, and see you next week.

Hey friend, Here’s a plot twist most people spend decades avoiding: The version of “you” that you’ve built-your preferences, your habits, your emotional reactions, your carefully curated quirks-might not actually be you. It might just be a well-organized, highly rehearsed fear response… wearing a name tag. Let that land. Most “Personality” Is Just Pattern Think about it. The fact that you always say yes? Fear of rejection. Your need to plan every detail? Fear of uncertainty. That confidence...

Hey friend, You know that moment. Someone says something harmless—a tone, a look, a four-word text. And suddenly your body’s on DEFCON 1.Jaw tight. Chest clenched. Breath shallow. You're ready to fight, flee, or write a novel-length text message that definitely won't age well. You think: “Why did that hit me so hard?” Here’s why:You weren’t responding to them. You were responding to the code inside you that got activated. Because your triggers? They’re not proof you’re crazy. They’re proof there’s...

Hey friend, Let’s kill the myth right now: You’re not an imposter. You’re just aware enough to realize that the version of you the world applauds… …isn’t entirely real. That “confident,” “high-performing,” “has-it-all-together” persona? It’s a projection.A carefully sculpted avatar stitched together from nervous system survival, childhood conditioning, and a sprinkle of Pinterest quotes. And deep down, something in you knows: “This isn’t the full story.” That doesn’t make you broken. That makes...
